A bottle of Nutiva Hemp Oil caught my eye the other day while shopping at the local health food store and I thought to myself, ‘Finally, hemp oil is on the shelves.” When I examined it closer, I saw that it was certified organic/non-gmo, no BPA and cold pressed from hemp seeds which was great. On the back of the label it states, “Hemp oil has nature’s ideal Super Omega-6 and Super Omega 3 ratio which can help the body metabolize fat.” That is fantastic because the Super Omega 3 can fight depression/anxiety and improve eye/brain health.  The Super Omega 6 helps to reduce nerve/arthritic pain/blood pressure and reverse ADHD.  But the price puzzled me because it was so cheap!
So, the bottle of hemp oil jumped into my basket and followed me home. My creative little mind began fantasizing about all the healthy recipes I could use it in but I read on the label that it is not great for cooking, so I decided to make my own salad dressing which turned out better than I expected.
Here is my recipe for ‘Hemp Salad Dressing & Veggie Dip’
1 cup Nutiva Organic Hemp oil (https://amzn.to/2HG5b6L)
1/4 cup Eden Foods ‘Ume Boshi Plum’ Vinegar (https://amzn.to/2HwKUAc)
4 Cloves Organic Fresh Roasted Garlic chopped
1 tsp Eden ‘Ume Boshi Plum Paste’ (https://amzn.to/2ujwP0s)
1 tsp Annie’s Organic Dijon Mustard (https://amzn.to/2U5IQFh)
½ tsp Organic Herbs (https://amzn.to/2uno4lX)
¼ tsp A Vogel Herbed Sea Salt (https://amzn.to/2CstZKT)
¼ tsp Redmond Real Salt (https://amzn.to/2Fpm4it)
1 tbsp Capers (https://amzn.to/2HyDgW3)
I put everything into a jar and whipped it with a fork.
Then I drizzled it over the greens I had just picked from my ‘tiny garden’ but it can be poured into a small bowl for dipping crudities. I squeezed fresh lemon juice on the salad to add a little zing but please feel free to add anything you like to make it your own special dressing.
When I was making the dressing, I noticed the hemp oil has a dark green color with some sediment and an unusual nutty smell to it which reminded me of the home pressed olive oils from Italy that were shipped to the US years ago. In my humble opinion, there is nothing better than a nutritious oil to increase the flavor of a crisp green salad or vegetable dip but this oil may require an adjustment in your taste buds.
While the taste of the oil can be enhanced, the health benefits are numerous as hemp seed oil has all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids that our body does not make which need to come from food. These amino acids build muscle tissue and increase the metabolic rate thus burning fat. The plant sterols have been shown to decrease inflammation and oxidative stress which in turn decreases arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis. The omega-3 fats and omega-6 help to balance inflammation, strengthen the immune system and prevent or improve breast or brain cancers.
While I was eating my salad, I felt this thick oil coating my lips and found it to be very therapeutic. This made me wonder if it would make into a nice body lotion or massage oil as research has shown it to be helpful in healing eczema, psoriasis and dry-itchy skin conditions as it is able to penetrate the cells to deeply moisturize the epidermis and sub-dermal layers. It does not clog the pores and it is reported to heal acne as well as scar tissue.
Curiosity is my middle name so I mixed a little Hemp oil with organic ‘Squalene Oil’ (https://amzn.to/2UVY7FG) to plump up my skin. Then I added quite a few drops of Organic Lavender Oil (https://amzn.to/2FnEOP6) for a nice aroma followed with some organic Vitamin E oil (https://amzn.to/2Yfgt6F) to carry the other oils deeper into the skin and tighten the wrinkles.

When I studied anatomy decades ago, I learned the skin is the largest organ of the body and it needs all the nourishment it can get to protect us from the elements. What we put on our skin gets absorbed immediately especially in the thin-skinned areas such as the throat, so it is important to use only certified organic/non-gmo ingredients. This home-made skin lotion was exquisite but I kept it in the refrigerator so it would not go rancid.
