Last week, on a hot summer day, I hiked along the serene West Fork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon above Sedona to pick wild blackberries and herbs. I noticed both sides of the creek were covered with horsetail. As a child, I used to pick the longest strands of this herb and separated them at the joints to use as straws. Growing up, I researched its medicinal properties and found it contains a bonding agent of four essential macromolecules that make up the connective tissue of the skin.

This herb is high in silica which has stimulating properties that help the skin to regenerate while improving elasticity and the absorption of collagen. The body needs silica for the synthesis of collagen which strengthens all the connective tissue to combat wrinkles, stretch marks, heal scar tissue, to build and plump up the skin. It reinforces the structure of the nails to accelerate their growth, improves circulation to the scalp and hair follicles. Some people have found that mixing horsetail extract with shampoo helped to eliminate dandruff and resulted in strong, lustrous, rejuvenated hair. That is why is called the number one beauty mineral.

I was amazed to discover that horsetail has been around for over 300 million years according to the Gaia Herbal company. They have a formula called Hair, Skin, & Nails (https://reverendwanda.com/product-page/)which contains a blend of herbs that synergistically strengthens the connective tissue while improving circulation in the body.

For generations, this herb has been used in the treatment of many health conditions such as brittle bones, hair, teeth, nails, gingivitis, tonsillitis, rheumatic disorders, edema, osteoarthritis, diabetes, ulcers gastrointestinal conditions, cardiovascular disease, respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, fever, bladder problems, and urinary tract infections. It has also been used to wash mercury out of the body.

I like to drink the freshly picked herb as a tea but when I can’t wildcraft it, I buy the Organic Horsetail Tea bags (https://reverendwanda.com/product-page/)and enjoy it hot during the winter to keep my body limber.

Externally, silica is used to heal acne, wounds, itchiness, rashes, burns, frostbite, chilblains, athletes’ foot, and cracked skin on the elbows & feet. Living Silica makes a gel called Collagen Booster Gel (https://reverendwanda.com/product-page/) which can be applied to problem areas to offer relief. When I did massage for two decades, I would recommend this for knee, shoulder and elbow pain from inflammation and arthritis. Most of my clients loved it.

Have you ever wondered why older people are more likely to break their bones when they fall? It is because the bones lack minerals, but the secret to preventing this problem is the silica which gives the bones flexibility while increasing their strength and density. Silica is one of the most abundant minerals on earth, but it is a challenge to find high concentrations in our food supply.

According to research, the body has a limited supply of silica at birth and as the body ages, it will use up 80% of its natural silica so it needs to be replenished daily. There are two forms of silica that nature provides, and one is from herbs and the other is minerals. The Orgono G5 Siliplant for Bones, Joints and Muscles (https://reverendwanda.com/product-page/) combines horsetail with the mineral form of silica and provides it in a liquid form that tastes like water without sweeteners. This is absorbed quickly through the intestinal walls and into the cells to rapidly rebuild the skin, hair, bones, teeth, tendons, and ligaments.

Another source for silica is seaweeds and the Solgar Oceanic Silica (https://reverendwanda.com/product-page/) is a great nutrient for building the body. If you have ever walked the beach and picked up a long strand of seaweed, it is very flexible and withstands the stormy seas until it reaches the shore. This is very symbolic of supporting us in being flexible and resilient through all of life’s challenges.

But how much silica is safe to take?
Since it is water-soluble, silica in any form is unlikely to cause side effects if you take to much so most nutritionists suggest 700 to 1,700 mg a day. Remember, the body does not make it, so it is a necessary nutrient.

Mother Nature is so benevolent at providing what the body needs to stay strong and healthy. That is my goal. To share as much knowledge as possible to make your body as strong as it can be.
